Durga, Devi, Shakti, Bhavani, Parvati different parts of India know her by different names, but the reverence and respect and love for Maa Durga is the same throughout the country. Durga, a warrior Goddess, with her name translating to “the inaccessible” or “the invincible”, is the most popular reincarnation of Goddess Shakti. Today many forms of her are worshipped in different parts, although she most popularly and commonly depicted as riding a Lion, ten hands adorned with ten different weapons, defeating and killing the buffalo demon ‘mahisasura’, In Bengal and some other adjoining areas she is also worshipped with her whole family with Karthikeya, Lord Ganesha, Goddess Saraswati and Goddess Laxmi.
Even while slaying the buffalo demon her face is lighted with smile which radiates peace and wellbeing for all.
Legend has it that Mahisasura, the shape shifting buffalo was once terrorizing the world, kicking up dust, leaving destruction in his wake with his armies torturing pious sadhus(hermits) and disrupting yagyas and havanas. As the Devas and Asuras are locked in a perpetual battle symbolizing the ever recurring war between good and evil, Mahisasura was looking to gain edge over the Devas by getting stronger. He started penance and hardship in the form of Tapasya of Lord Brahma. Finally Lord Brahma appeared and granted him a wish. Mahisasura asked for immortality where ‘no man or animal’ in the face of the earth can kill him. Brahma granted him that wish saying that a woman will be the end of him.
Empowered by the blessing from Lord Brahma, Mahisasura let his reign of terror loose. He defeated Indra, the king of Gods and drove the Devas out of heaven. Defeated and humiliated they went to Lord Vishnu. Consulting with Lord Brahma and Lord Shiva, the god of destruction, Lord Vishnu formulated the plan to create a female form to kill Mahisasura. Thus born Durga. Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva combined all their powers together to give birth to Durga. Durga is an incarnation of Goddess Parvati, the daughter of Himavan, the lord of the mountains. She is the mother-goddess — Shakti — the power that runs the universe.
All the Gods including Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva gave durga their weapons. Shiva gave her his trident, Brahma his Kamandal, Vishnu his discus, Indra his Vajra, Himalaya gems and a Lion to ride on. Adorned by gems and garlands and weapons from all the Gods, she defeated Mahisasura in fierce battle that raged for fifteen days. On the day of Mahalaya, Mahisasura was killed by Durga
Durga symbolizes the victory of good over evil, win of light over darkness. She is the true reminder of women power and how goodness always prevails in the face fiercest of evils.
