Fiberglass Durga Idol
An utterly fantastic fiberglass statue of Durga defeating the buffalo demon or asura Mahisha. Fiberglass Durga Idol is the center piece of the sculpture. She is radiant, standing with her ten arms spread out like the rays of the sun each holding a weapon bent on the destruction of Mahishasura. Fiberglass Durga Idol captures the moment when Durga’s spear pierces the chest of Mahisha with drops of blood pouring from the wound. Durga’s vahana or vehicle, a lion, is actively participating in the foray jumping on the the Buffalo of Mahisha. Fiberglass Durga Idol Surrounding Durga statue are small versions of Ganesh and Murugan. Ganesh is in the abhaya mudra and holds a lotus, conch shell and an elephant goad. At his feet his vehicle, Mooshika the rat. Murugan is on the opposite side holding a bow and arrow. He has a slight mustache with his vehicle, a peacock by his side. Lakshmi is behind Ganesha with one hand held up in the abhaya mudra. Saraswati is behind Murugan playing the veena. Both their vehicles, the owl and swan are on the base of the sculpture.
How the sculpture is made: First each of the gods are made using a clay. Fiberglass Durga Idol A mold is then made from each clay model. A liquid fiberglass mixture is then poured into the mold and allowed to harden. The mold is then broken off and the hardened fiber models are put together. Clothes are then fashioned to fit the gods. The clothes are custom made using old saris and patterned cloth. Glass beads are then fixed to the cloths.Fiberglass Durga Idol The crowns are made using cloth and then held in place with fiber skeletons. Beads are added to the crowns as well. Jewelry inlcuding nose rings, earrings, rings and bangals are added to each figure. The long, black, curly hair is made from horse hair and is added to each of the gods. The figures are all hand painted.
